Well written, Bob. We'll be lucky if giving him the extension now "buys" us the respect factor that lets us save a few million down the road.

I think what's been lost to many is that Danny said that Rondo is not a max player "right now". Who knows what Rondo thinks, but I bet he'd
agree with that, with the caveat that he thinks he will be at some point. If you're a self-confident kid like Rondo, if you don't get what you think
you'll someday - and maybe as soon as next year - deserve, maybe you want to ride out this season and see where things stand next Summer.
I'd love to see the C's lock him up for a good long while but have no sense if that will happen this year, next or not at all. |

Thanks Zeke and JMost.
The prevailing opinion against giving Rondo something approaching the max contract is the scoring/shooting, which I think is a bit of a crock, especially when he's on a team with shooters like Pierce, Allen, Garnett and House. The example I think of is someone like Shaq. Sure he's a center, but he's not known as a great shooter, scorer yes, but not shooter. If the team wanted/needed to score 20 pts/game, Rondo could easily do that by increasing his attempts. And about the poor shooting PG, Jason Kidd was the same during his 1st 4 years where he averaged 67% or so, slightly better than Rondo's career average. But Kidd has been an 80% FT shooter since. I see Rondo doing the same thing because he's a very serious man . . . |

Nice article Bob. Thanks for the mention as well.
It looks like Rondo may take something less than max, if tonight's stories are to be believed. If so, get it done. |

I heard two things on the radio this morning. The first said that the two sides were not that far apart. The second said that Rondo's agent said that he
didn't expect anything to get done this week and that Rondo would become a restricted free agent next Summer. And as I write this WEEI reported that the
sides were $10 -15 million apart on a 5 year deal. Stay tuned.
There are worse things than having a young guy in a contract year trying to show his worth to the league, and you have the right to match (and beat) any offer. |

What I think Ainge wants to do is let Allens contract run out and use whatever cap space they have to sign a good player. And THEN resign Rondo since you can
sign your own player to whatever you want. If they sign Rondo first, he will take up any available cap space and kill any FA signings.

Ugh - very interesting angle - but I think there are some complications to the theory. They have to sign Pierce and Allen too and if they sign them using Bird
Rights they will be over the cap and if they sign them as FAs, then they would be using the cap space they created by not resigning them under their Bird
Rights.
I'll ask Zeke to chip in . . . |

The order doesn't matter. I don't have time to look, but Rondo will count against their cap number until one of two things happen: 1) They re-sign him,
or 2) renounce their rights to him. This is to prevent exactly this from happening. If they renounce their rights to him, they can no longer use bird rights,
he's just like any other UFA out there.
I *think* (though I'm not 100% on this) that only his current salary (or 120% of it or something like that) would count against the cap in the meantime. So this might be one of the few instances where this might pay off a bit. However, I still don't think we'd be below the cap. Also remember that the MLE amount counts against the cap too, unless it is also renounced. Allen's expiring contract would have to bring us well below the cap for this scenario to come into play. |

Looks like 5yrs/$55M. According to Bob's article, looks like we got a good deal. Now, earn it, Rajon.

I'm wondering if there aren't some incentives in his package. But yes - I think he could have done well as RFA and gotten closer to LaMarcus Aldridge
money. Good for the Celtics, and good for Rondo for not being too greedy. I think he will want to prove to Boston fans (and Chris Paul) that he's worth the
money.

I wonder if this eliminates Ray Allen from getting big money to resign here then? That makes three more or less max deals in the fold and can't see the
owners shelling out $10 mil to resign Ray as well.

They should have Bird's right on Allen and he may be the best player they can sign for around 7-10mill for two years since I doubt they will be under the
cap. I forgot the website that show that stuff.
And one thing that is scary-good.....Rondo is two younger then Lester Hudson. Yikes.

Nice, Manch. Don't you wish that Cooz was still around at least once in a while for the broadcasts so we could hear what he had to say about RR. I
remember you could tell he loved the kid even two-three years ago. Imagine what he thinks now!

Cousy? You know he would be critical of Rondo even though he would be gushing that the Celtics have a bonafide PG. Cousy, Ainge and Rivers all mentoring Rondo
- I think Rondo would blow his stack!

Rondo got his money and I say good. Now let him play and develop and grow into a great PG.

Can they Celtics spend any of that $11 mil a year on Rondo to get him a free throw coach?
