Only heard about it this morning on the radio. Teammates fighting is not good. What did Youk say to Manny to make him slap him across the face? Crisp could be
done with the Red Sox. The whole thing is a mess.

IT'S ALL OVER. IT'S ALL OVER. And the Boston Celtics are World Champions for the SEVENTEENTH TIME.

I believe Manny was pissed about Youk complaining about calls. Funny how Manny doesn't %%!!+ to Ortiz when he does it.

When you consider stuff like this to your stars, you just have to be thankful that the Red Sox haven't wasted too much $$$ for pitching as of late. |

Time to revive this thread. In spite of a tough 1-0 loss to the Yankees last night, I like how the Sox are playing lately, mainly because te starting pitching
is really stepping up. Beckett, Dice-K and Lester appear to be as good at the top of the rotation as any team in the majors. Ultimately that should carry them.
Papi is coming back now so they've weathered that storm.
Yanks made a big trade, gving up 4 prospects. I thought Cashman wasn't going to do that any more. Can't see a big improvement there. |

If the Sox bullpen (which has cost them at least 10 games this year) is finally straightened out, they should be fine. I agree with Shaughessy though that
Manny has written his own ticket out of town and I won't shed any tears when he's gone.

I'm missing the umph in the line-up with both Crisp and Ellsbury are in the line-up, and a weak-hitting Varitek and then Lugo. All the sudden the bottom
part of the order is looking too dynamic when Ortiz or Ramirez are missing. But the pitching is looking sweet.
They can do a lot with Ramirez money no doubt, while Youk and Drew look to have become better sluggers - and so, Manny leaving may not be the end of the Red Sox world - but he will be the best FA out there in 2009. And how about the Varitek contract situation? |

I think Tek will be back, but on a short-term deal and for reduced money.
I'm curious to see what happens in the outfield when they let Manny go. I don't see them going with Drew, Ellsbury, Crisp and Moss because they're all lefty hitters except switch-hitting Coco. Everyone always says you can't have too much pitching, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox trade some young pitching for help at catcher and some RH outfield thump. Also, Lowrie will replace Pipp Lugo. |

Nice Wally Pipp reference, JMost...
I'm not so sure about Ramirez being gone. I don't think there's anyone on the FA market that can replace him, I think he'll be back next year. Also, there's reports that he has patellar tendonitis in is knee. I don't think they'd be upset if he was sitting out a couple of games in July because of a legitimate problem. |

I don't think it's any one thing with Manny. I just think they're tired of dealing with one thing after another, and his production isn't
worthy of $20 million per year any more. Even if he does come back I wouldn't be surprised if it's for less money. Of course if he finished the year
on a tear and the team repeats, who knows?

Don't we always hate Manny during the dog days of summer and then forget about it all by the end of the season?

No, it isn't always all right by the end of the season. He quit on the team in '06. That was when I decided I wanted to move on. As long as he's
here I'll root for him, and even enjoy his "high-five" moments, but I won't mourn his loss whenever it happens. Did you happen to see him
jog out a double play grounder he hit yesterday? I can't stand that sh*t and I don't want it on my team.

I have been taking a hiatus from sports this summer in general, outside of the peripheral watch on the C's. I was pretty much done with Manny back in
'06 as well JMost, but true to my statement above, I did kind of forget about it. I figure with the money saved the ownership can go out and get some other
things done. I won't mourn the loss either, but however it goes down, if he is on the team next Spring I probably won't remember how many times his
attitude has irked me throughout his career.

We will hate him if they don't make the playoffs and he is taking days off. In 2006?, he took off the whole 5 game Yank series and they didn't make the
playoffs. When they do make it, Manny hits well so we forgive him. This year he takes days off, he did even swing against the Yanks int the 9th, pushes an
older man down, fights with Youk, puts down John Henry who has always defended him, and not says he is sick of the Sox who ONLY take all this crap and gave him
a humongous contract that has these two $20mill options that HIS AGENT ASKED FOR. Now that hey might sign those options, it isn't good enough. FUK YOU.
Manny is/was a great hitter, but for $20 mill he is only getting about 24hr and 100rbi's now. I don't thing he is back and since Scott Boras is his
agent AND Variteks, they may both be gone with Theo let's Manny float in the wind. Theo may even sign the extention and then trade him just so he
doesn't go to the Yanks.

I know most people think Manny won't be traded now, but remember '04 when Nomar was traded at the deadline. That team of course went on to win the WS.
Pay no attention to the 3-for-5 with a couple ribbies game last night. The guy has worn out his welcome this time. I was done when he got into it with Youk (who is a future superstar). There are standards of behavior that are more important than winning.

Exactly. I think they're actively shopping him and if they can get someone who is under their control for 3+ years, and who is of approx equal value, they will trade him now. If not, let him walk and get the 2 first-round picks in compensation. |

Manny is gone along with Hansen (mid-reliever) and Moss (5th outfielder) in return for Jason Bay, the Pirates all-star LF.
Alot of Boston fans are relieved this is over and that the team can get back to playing baseball. Jason Bay is a solid player, and I think everyone just wanted a good clubhouse guy that was solid over the pain-in-the-ass star. I can't blame the Sox at all for making it happen. Gammons was at the end of his rope - here's what he wrote on Monday

Thank God this saga is over. Manny was my fav player on the team but after all this nonsense with ESPNDeportes, he HAD to go. For a guy to think after being given the longest leash antics-wise in the history of baseball by Francona and Epstein that he was somehow mistreated by the club is an outrage. We got a good player in return and I think will produce just fine offensively, we have PLENTY of good hitters. Ellsbury (when he gets it together), Pedroia, Drew, Ortiz, Bay, Lowell, Youkilis - or really any variation of that 1-7 is pretty damn good. And BTW- all the above are good clubhouse guys and great teammates. Guys who grind it out and play hurt rather than bench themselves with phantom injuries.

I'm glad he's gone and this is a good deal for the Sox. They get younger and save some money. While Bay may not be a HOF player, he will replace Manny
and maybe give the team a little more given the way the team feels about him and how much the clubhouse might improve...
I will say one thing to Manny though, The Sox were able to win World Series in the absence of Nomar and Pedro, and they can do it again without you. Manny really did it push it to another level this time, I actually think he might have quit on the team this time. As much as I have forgotten his misdeads in the past, I misjudged this drama just a few short days ago. There was no way this was going to work any longer... |
