Pretty rare for me these days, but this is the last time we'll see the old Yankee Stadium. The Yankees really needed that one to keep any hope alive. Now it looks like they will miss the playoffs for the first time in a very long time. The Yanks clearly have many problems, but one thing that really stood out for me was the poor defense. They really don't have any outstanding outfielders. Cano and Jeter are OK up the middle, but even A-Rod made a bad error last night. Sox meanwhile are catching some good breaks. Wakefield always makes me nervous but he did OK and the bullpen looked very sharp - Delcarmen, Masterson, Okajima, Papelbon. If Lowell and Drew come back healthy, soon, I like their chances.

Now they have a chance to put NY away. The Yankees look old up and down their roster. The young pieces they have either are hurt or haven't performed as well as expected. (Before last night I had no idea that Melky Cabrera had been sent down to AAA.) The Sox have just done a better job so far in integrating young players.

It brought back some great memories for me. I hadn't gone in years, maybe 12-13 years. The new stadium is right next to it. The Bombers lost to the Blue Jays 7-6 after going out to a 6-2 lead. Darell Rasner pitched and was doing amazingly well until the 7th when Robinson Cano botched a double play ball that opened the doors. I hardly watch the Yanks anymore though I keep up with their goings on. They don't seem like the Yankee teams of recent years. I'm very disappointed that they re-signed A-Rod. Even with all that money, Brian Cashman hasn't done a great job with the team's roster, IMO.

Mr. May he is indeed. The fact that he hit into the double-play with the bases loaded to end the game in the 9th, makes him the goat if the Yankees want to select one at least for yesterday, if not for the season. Meanwhile, the Red Sox got another pleasant suprise out of a rookie pitcher yesterday in Bowden debut. That makes Lester, Papelbon, Declareman, Bucholz, Masterdon and now Bowden as homegrown talent in their pitching staff - wow. And they already have Youkilis, Pedroia, Ellsbury, and Lowrie on the field. They need a power hitter in their farm system, and they will be all set.

Like I said, they are a poor defensive team and that really hurts their pitching. Once George 'retired' I thought Cashman was going to pull back and try to re-build the farm system a la Theo Epstein, but it hasn't worked out. Sox seem to be a little more careful in bringing their young pitchers long slowly; you can see how that has paid off with Lester, Masterson, Bowden and to a lesser extent Buchholtz. MB, the young power hitter was supposed to be Hanley Ramirez. We would have been looking at a lineup of Ellsbury, Pedroia, Youkilis, Ortiz, HRamirez, Bay, Lowrie, Casey, Varitek. That's both solid and young. Of course, they wouldn't have Josh Beckett but with all these live young arms...who knows, hindsight is 20-20.

Yankees: End of an Era? 12 of the team's top players are 33 years old and over and some much older. If they miss the play-offs it will be the first time since 1993. wow...and ow. A-Rod is simply not Yankee star material. Lord knows why Cashman re-upped him for 10 more year just to watch him approach the HR record. I thought the Yanks were about winning, not individual records. Money drove that decision, but nothing brings in fans and money like winning. How could someone so smart be so dumb? Giambi was said to be the first deviation from what was classic Yankee talent. He can't field his position like his predecessor, Tino Martinez. As SD said, defense matters. Damon in center, Giambi at first, Cano at 2nd, Rodriguez at 3rd, Matsui in left - none of them are great at fielding their position. Most important, the best pitchers in the game have eluded the Yanks for the past number of years. It starts and ends with pitching and defense. The Yankees have seemingly forgotten that addage. The feeling to try to win every year has caused few minor leaguers to get a chance with the big club, if they are even growing them there anymore. I'm hoping some of the young arms they have are going to develop into top flight pitchers. But there are few position players on the team who are good 2 way players at the moment. Very disappointing. As far as A-Rod, not sure what your definitions of "Yankee star material" and "classic Yankee talent" are. Whatever it is, I don't think Cashman is to blame for A-Rod. The guy is simply not clutch (except in April and May). He seems to bring too much pressure on himself, that's pretty clear.

He gets blame for that, IMHO. Teams seem to get better after A-Rod leaves them. Coincidence? Hmm...... I'd like to still see the Yankees trade him for young promising pitching mostly and some top prospects perhaps. I talked with a friend who is a huge Yankee fan today. He said he doesn't know anyone who is thrilled that A-Rod is still on the team. That would include me. The thing to remember is that the Yankees can always be competitive with the money they have to spend. But an organic connection to their base fans requires a bit more, at least in my case it does.

It's worse than I thought. 158 out if 158 in clutch. This is one player I wish the Sox had beaten the Yankees out of. They were rumored to be hot on his trail before this contract. Not trying to start anything. Just saying. and that's what I mean by 'Yankee material'. The guy simply is not a winner nor a team oriented guy. But I don't blame him for taking the money. I blame the Rangers and then the Yankees for offering it to him. The amazing thing is how you can get that many HRs and hits and have so few of them count. Doesn't seem possible....but it's happening with him almost every year.

BTW...Hank Steinbrenner seems more over bearing than his dad was in recent years. I'd like to see a serious commitment made to their minor league system and drafting (and trading) at the minor league level. Red Sox are a solid operation right now to give credit where it's due. It was just amazing watching him get big hit after big hit, an incredibly high percentage of them tieing and winning games late. That year A-Rod had similar numbers (and no doubt won the MVP because Ortiz doesn't play in the field) but it was hard for me to believe that A-Rod was as clutch that year as Papi. Obviously I don't see the Yankees play as much as the Sox, but I've only seen one other season like Papi's that year (Yaz '67) and the odds of it happening in two cities in the same year seemed miniscule. Apparently I was right.

Sox also have a bunch of homegrown talent they traded away. Theo can draft, not he has to trade better and work on middle relievers. I was down on the Manny trade, but it appears Moss will only be a 4th or 5th outfielder and Manny isn't helping the Dodgers to win, so they basically loose two draft picks that they would have gotten when Manny leaves at years end.

Good pitching can certainly make a good hitting opponent look silly. A lot of frustration from players that were hot at the plate until this Tampa Bay series, where the Sox have only batted 0.175 the two last games - 0 for 7 by Jason Bay was particularly frustrating as he had multiple opportunities to put the game away. More suspense to ride out September in Red Sox Nation

Getting the playoffs is always special - just you look around and most teams that were in last year aren't this year. I really love this team and hope they do what they need to mend before the playoffs, especially since Baltimore seems intent on gift wrapping the division title to TB. Sox already had their chance to beat TB head-to-head and weren't quite up to the challenge - so I guess I can't cry in my beer too much. The Rays will be everyone's underdog, and the Angels are at the top of their game. Repeating for the Sox will take a good measure of luck as usual. In the National League, I do hope the Cubs make it a reality and get to the WS. That would be dream in itself whether they win it all or not.
