Let's see Patriots season - done. I took Brady with my first round pick in both my fantasy football leagues. Out of my two entries in Survivor pools, the
Chargers did me in, but the Pats kept me alive.
Football is dead to me. |

I think this calls for the classic question of which SINGLE player is most important to their respective teams. I'll jump out by saying I think Brady is
more improtant to the Pats than either KG or Pierce are to the Celitcs. Take a shot at that, gents.

I'd agree with that. Both teams might make the playoffs missing any one of those guys, but neither is going all the way. Baseball on the other
hand has no one that important IMO.

Congrats to MVJ's Steelers. That D is pretty impressive. I haven't seen the line for the SB yet but I imagine the Steelers will be 10 point favorites
or so. I'll be rooting for Arizona though, more for the fans than the team - who were dogs when they came to NE.

Thank you kindly JMOst! The Steeler defense is a machine. Arizona is a legitimate contender hitting on all cylinders. Can't say enough about Big Ben. The
Super Bowl will be a great chess match between former assistant Whisenhunt and Lebeau.

The Super Bowl turned out to be a helluva game. About half-way through the third quarter I was thinking that it was a pretty lackluster game, but the 4th
quarter was one of the best ever.

It was a game of inches at times - the 100-yd run back with no time left before the half was unbelievable. And the final charge by the Steelers reminded me of
the Giants victory over the Pats last year. What a pretty catch in the corner of the end zone by the Steelers. Didn't know that Ben had that impressive of
a resume with regard to comeback victories - move over TBrady!

Thanks, classy Jmost..
Yeah MVBob, it's nothing new -- ive seen Ben do this many times over. I'm happy he did this now on the grandest stage for all to see that he's more than just a caretaker and beneficiary of a great defense. I think it's move over Peyton. He's right there with Brady as the most clutch. Peyton's playoff record stinks but at least he has one ring. |

Wow - MVJ, I don't begrudge you the SBs, and there's something to be said for ANY QB that wins a SB (much less two). I can't put Ben in that
category, though. I see him as more a Trent Dilfer type (and that's not a dig, I've always thought Dilfer was HIGHLY underrated) than a Peyton/Brady
type. The difference is, I don't think Ben can carry a team. Peyton's playoff record is more a reflection of a crappy defense than his own doing. And,
to be honest, I felt that last drive was as much Santonio Holmes (if not moreso, because of an UNBELIEVABLE TD catch) as it was Ben (although, he did deliver
the ball to him).
Again, not a dig at Big Ben. Even as a "caretaker of a great defense", winning two SBs is more than 2/3 of the QBs in the league are capable of. But I just don't see him quite in the Brady/Manning echelon. In either case, great win for the Steelers. I was pulling for the Cardinals, but you can't deny the better team won. Congrats - enjoy the victory, nothing's sweeter (except Celtics titles, of course :-). Also, I'm probably in the minority, but I'm glad there wasn't a replay on the Warner fumble at the end of the game. The first replay showed me it was clearly a fumble. The booth made the right call here to not review it. My one problem with replay is the excessive delays. When it runs amok, you can't celebrate a play because you have to wait for the replay. I prefer that they don't stop play unless they think there's a good chance the call should be overturned. |

Ben = Trent Dilfer
Then Dan Rooney overpaid with a 102 million contract extension. Well, no one can now say the Steelers are cheap. |

Any thoughts on the Pats-Colts game last night - the call to go for it on 4th and two is shaking Patriots Nation faith in Belichick like never before. Of
course the guy is afforded a bye or two, but 99.9% of the time you don't make that call.

I just read that Zeke. The anti-BB reaction has been extreme and frankly, wrong. It was a close call and most coaches will always do the safe thing in those
situations. BB does what he thinks is best (even when he must know that he'll get crucified if it doesn't turn out) and should get credit for that. I
have an affinity for people who think for themselves, and I love that in Belichick.
It didn't turn out. It was a tough loss. And the Patriots are still going to make the playoffs, are still likely going to have to beat Indy in Indy (as they probably were even if they had won) and now know that they can play with anyone, even on the road. It's hardly the end of the world that some people would make it out to be. And the fact that the play didn't work doesn't mean it was the wrong decision - as hard as it is for some people to understand that.
... aaaaand there's a steal by Bird!

Well the pendulum appears to be swinging BB's way then - good find Zeke. The reaction amongst the talking heads has come down hard against the decision
Belichick - even so far as saying that he disrespected Indy's defense as well as his own defense. Oh the drama.
I was amazed that Peyton Manning threw those interceptions in the 3rd, but then came back with 100% accuracy on his throws in the 4th quarter. It was like a rope-a-dope technique against the Pats or something. You have to admit it still stings to lose to Indy yet again. 1-6 against them I think - that's got to be frustrating for Belichick, on top of all the criticism he's getting for the 4th-and-2 call. In the end, as JMost points out, it doesn't really matter, as if they won, a lot of things would have to go the Pats way to secure HFA for the playoffs. |

I loathe Belichick but I loved the call. 31 coaches in the NFL don't make that call but that don't make them right necesssarily. The Pats have made a
living successfully executing in these short yardage 4th down situations. The defense was awful and Manning was on fire. Simply put, you play to your
strengths. This is chess not checkers, that was the right call no doubt. It's too bad guys like Bruschi and Harrison didn't get his back considering
they're sporting 3 super bowl rings.

This is one of the reasons I like BB as a coach - he's willing to make a move to help his team even if he gets skewered for it if it fails - this is why 31
coaches don't make that call, IMO.
BB and Parcells are like the Earl Weaver of football, IMO. I don't think they fully understand the statistical significance of their decisions, but I think it will come out later that they were visionaries (of sorts - like I said, I don't think either of them, like Weaver, really understand the statistics behind their decisions, but all were willing to think outside the traditional frameworks and find ways to give their team advantages). At any rate, I've been reading more of that guys blog (AdvancedNFLStats.com), and there's a lot of interesting stuff there. Including a video clip of an Arkansas HS coach who never punts (even if it's 4th and 20 on their own 10), and who goes for onside kicks 75% of the time. |
