Give it up for Powe!

32Fan made the analogy of Charles Oakley for Powe on the C17 Blog, but I don't think Oakley ever got in an offensive groove like Powe did last night - he
had a couple of nice jumpers, but doing doing most of his damage with dunks and layups, where he also got to the free throw line as a result (5-7 FTs - not bad
for a big man).

Oak is a very good comparison. Their games are very similar. In fact, I recall Oakley had a mid-range jumper but didn't use it much. The other thing I was
thinking last night is how much Leon Powe looks like Jason Richardson, especially when he smiles or squints.

I'm here to jump on the Leon bandwagon.

I'm not sure if I'm entitled to vote or not since I don't get to see too many games. However, I would vote for Powe if I could. I like the
comparison to Oakley. We could use an Oakley type on this team. Oakley was always one of those players that you liked and hated at the same time. Of course
you hated him because he played for someone else. If he was with the Celtics, we would have loved him.

Oakley on the Knicks from 1988-98 brings up some difficult memories, but the poor guy never got a ring after being with the Jordan Bulls
For what it's worth - Powe's PER is higher this season than Oakley's ever was - we may have a diamond in the rough when it comes to Powe, and hopefully we can sign the guy to a contract extension next fall (he's signed through '08) |

And who was singing the praises of Leon Powe in the preseason?!

He had a great summer league but many of us were saying Baby is more talented and has more upside. While that may still be true, we can't deny Powe's
contributions and hard work. MB, I would think it will be a very tough decision on extending him.

Both guys have exceeded my expectations for them this year. I thought both would struggle more to get their shot off inside, and both are shooting from 10-15
feet better than I knew they could. Two nice surprises.
And speaking of 2nd round draft picks, Pruitt's coach in the NBDL is raving about him.

I believe some people were describing Powe as an abortion on offense in the preseason. Not that I am bitter, but I think I warned you that I would be handing
out I told you so's by the end of the season
I'll have to go back and find the thread so I can quote some of you - j/k of course... |

The one thing that really impresses me is how well Davis has learned to use his width and foot quickness to overcome his lack of height in getting shots off
inside. In pre-season I figured he was going to be one of those guys who could rebound, set picks and play positional D. Didn't foresee at all the
running hook shots and general lowpost savvy he is showing. I don't remember having strong thoughts about Powe other than that he seemed to struggle to
get shots off inside without just forcing them up. He's really shining in taking it hard to the hoop lately.

Both guys have quickly learned how to use their wide bodies to their advantage.
Baby always had the good footwork -- remember that Dancing With The Stars clip on Youtube? He is naturally nimble on his feet and it carries over to basketball. He's also benefitted greatly from having 'big bro' KG around to teach him the ropes in his rookie year. Powe has improved offensively by not forcing things. We all recall him trying to post up and attempting that awful looking hook shot of his. Now he just let's the offense come to him in the low post through pick-and-rolls and offensive boards, and then when the defense plays him for the paint, he steps out for a wide open mid-range shot. It's really fascinating to see him change his priorities on the offensive end and succeed so nicely. |

Powe has also gotten time with the more experienced players on the court so when he is out there his role is clearly defined and I think that has helped him
establish himself rather than force things. I also like Davis' development this season and he could still have more upside, but he has been wildly
inconsistent IMO which is what I expected from him (he is a rookie after all) but he has had some big performances as well that I never thought we'd see
this season. He is really great for bodying up guys that are much taller than him and played Duncan well (in the previous match-up) and Big Z this season.

If we are singing the praises of both Big Baby and Powe, and Perkins has been improving, it's hard to ignore the tutelage of Cliff Ray . . . they are
learning how to play from someone . . . maybe Garnett and Ray split the Coaching Board award

In spite of the 3 missed FTs in the 4th, I vote for Pierce for the Mavs game. He kept going aggressively to the basket when nothing else was happening on
offense.

I am going to vote for Ray - I know Pierce is the logical choice, but Ray hit the 3 pointer to win it after botching the fast break with the pass behind
Cassell...

I'm going to go with Pierce. He played the most consistent game at both ends of the floor.

If it isn't Rondo for the Hornets game then I demand a paper trail for all future balloting. It's not every day that your PG badly outplays the
league's best PG.
